On Saturday 7th May,
Maidenhead entered 4 crews into Thames Ditton regatta, held over
a wonderful stretch of river in front of Hampton court. Despite the wind
and showers, all of Maidenhead's crews battled well and WJ14 sculler, Maddie
Reynolds, provided Maidenhead with their first ever win at Thames Ditton
Regatta. Well done Maddie!
In some eventful racing,
the boys J14 and J15 coxed quads also performed well to earn two 2nd
places.
Maddie Reynolds rowing in the WJ14 single sculls division had limited opposition as she rowed well to complete the course and win easily over the Weybridge Ladies RC. In the boys J14 4x+, M. Powell, T. O’Reily, J. Henderson and S. Lilly, coxed by E. Sanarkin met Hampton in the first round and rowed hard but lost. They progressed to the Plate round where their competition was Winchester. Again they faced another strong crew and just lost. The J15 4x+ with T. Courtney, M. Compton, T. Wildbore and Erton Hezene (rowing up 1 year) again coxed by E. Sanarkin, met KCS Wimbledon (A) in the first event. 200 meters into the race, one of the crew caught a crab, which slowed the boat considerably. Recovering quickly they rowed hard to overtake Wimbledon with about 150 meters of the race to go, and then won by 2 lengths. In the second race they met with Dulwich College ‘B’, and rowed hard to win by another 1.5 lengths. In the Final they met Dulwich ‘A’. As they set off Maidenhead kept on level terms until the half way point when Dulwich turned on the power and overtook our crew. The crew did well and qualified for a second place medal. In the J15 2X team of S. Prosser and M. Reeve, the day started with an early race against KCS Wimbledon, which they won by 4 lengths, to proceed into the next race against Kingston RC. They again turned on the power to win by 2 lengths. In the Semi-Final they met with Walton who they had met with at the Interregional Qualifiers. From the start the race was hard with the crews close up to about the 700 meter point, where Walton broke away and won the race by 1.5 lengths. Walton went on to win the final. A special thanks to Emma who coxed all the crew boats on the day, and she was a great source of encouragement to all the competitors. Information for this report supplied by Suzanne Reeves.
