4 Wins at Marlow Town Regatta Print E-mail
Thursday, 16 June 2005
Maidenhead Juniors won 3 events at Marlow Town Regatta on Saturday 11th June and Novice Veterans Roy Prosser and Henry Cremin also won in the double scull to show that it's not just the juniors who are allowed to win at Maidenhead.

Marlow Town regatta saw lovely weather this year and was fully subscribed with racing starting at 8am and finishing at 6.30pm. It was well attended by the Maidenhead Juniors with some excellent results for both boys and girls.

The 900m buoyed downstream course has a free start with up to 3 lanes available for racing. Although it is theoretically possible to row a straight line from start to finish if there is only one boat, with two or three boats racing side by side there is a slow right hand bend. The Berkshire station has the advantage of the bend and the water flow towards the weir during the last quarter of the course.

Intermediate Girls
The Maidenhead intermediate girls had 5 boats entered in 3 events. None of these events were split into A and B sections. Anna Campbell and Carmel Bevan were the Maidenhead 'A' boat in the WJ13 double sculls, with Lexy Dobson and Fifi Bevan as the 'B' boat. Unfortunately they were drawn to race each other as well as the home crew from Marlow in the first round. There was the, by now, normal puzzled announcement of Bevan of Maidenhead on the Berkshire station with Bevan of Maidenhead on the centre station. Both Maidenhead crews made a good start and after about 200m Carmel and Anna had pulled away and were able to wind down a little into a steadier pace with a lead of 3 lengths. Fifi and Lexy (both WJ12s) had more of a battle but kept their one length lead over the Marlow crew even when Marlow girls put in their last big push over the final 100m. An excellent row by the 2 younger girls and a good win through to the finals for the older girls.
In the final Anna and Carmel met a double from Oxford City who had looked very neat in their heat. Again, Maidenhead had a fairly good start and were soon 3 lengths up. The race looked as if it was a safe bet when suddenly Anna caught a crab as the waves of a cruiser knocked her balance a little, then Carmel caught an even bigger onealmost stopping the boat with both rowers out of sync. Fortunately they kept their cool, took a breath and started up again; their lead had been cut to a length so they worked hard to extend it again to a 3 lengths win.

Maidenhead also had 2 boats in the WJ14 double scullsAimee Broadbent/Carmel Bevan and Harriet Ingall/Emma Alington. Carmel and Aimee had never actually been in a double together before their heat. Their start let them down and they went two lengths down almost immediately. However, they steered a good course and persevered and were coming back all the way, but not quite enough, coming second to Sir William Perkins by a length, 3 lengths ahead of Claire’s Court in third. In contrast the Maidenhead second crew, Emma and Harriet, have been rowing together as double off and on for the last 3 years. They were drawn on the Berkshire station against Reading (centre) and Marlow (Bucks). Again Maidenhead had a good start but the home crew managed to pull away. Emma and Harriet were pushing them all the way up to the line and finished in second place by half a length and well ahead of third place Reading. The Marlow crew went on to win the final.

The Intermediate girls' final entry was Lucy Brockwell in the WJ14 single scull. Lucy is still a WJ13 but was rowing up a year because there was no WJ13 category. Unfortunately she was drawn against Merrifield of Marlow. Lucy had a good start but Merrifield used her knowledge and familiarity with the stretch to open up a commanding and winning lead.

Boys
The J15 single scull of Matt Reeve, won his heat and rowed strongly to win the final by 2 lengths despite losing his glasses rowing down to the start. This was Matt's first win in his single scull and well deserved. The J15 single scull of Tim Wildbore put in a good row but was unfortunately beaten into second place in his first heat.

The J14 B class coxed quad of Simon Lilley, Matt Powell, James Henderson, Sergie Klesney and coxed by Robert Ashburner won their semi-final and had a slow but controlled start in the final, They didn't let the faster start of the opposition worry them and, sculling well, at 500m they pulled ahead to win by 1 length, for the crew's first victory. The J14 A class coxed quad of, Tom O'Reilly, Ross McFarlane, Ertan Hazine, Alex Ride and coxed by Joshua Prosser were unfortunately knocked out in the semi-final.

The J15 double sculls of Adam Lilley and Tim Wildbore with Michael Compton and Toby Courtney all qualified through the semi-finals, Lilley/Wildebore rowed the final to second place with Compton/Courtney in third place.

Veteran Men
The Mens Veteran Novice Double of Roy Prosser and Henry Cremin won their semi-final with some rather unorthodox steering, but rowed a much better course in the final to win by 2.5 lengths over a Marlow crew.
