Karon Wins Gold and Silver at National Vets Regatta Print E-mail
Thursday, 16 June 2005
On Sunday 12th June, while many members of Maidenhead Rowing Club were competing at local Regattas in Marlow and Reading, one rower made her way north to the National Veteran's Championships at Holme Pierrepoint in Nottingham . The journey was certainly worthwhile, as Karon Phillips came home with a Silver in Women's Veteran Novice Sculls and Gold in Women's Veteran D Coxed Fours.

Conditions were not good, with a gusting head wind over the 1000m multi-lane course, but Karon, 53, who has been rowing for just 4 years, came 2nd in the Womens Novice Single Sculls to win Silver - beaten only by a competitor close to 20 years her junior. Later in the day, rowing with a composite crew from Barnes Bridge Ladies, Burway RC and Thames RC, Gold was the result, as the Veteran D (average age over 50) Coxed Four had a comfortable win over Birmingham/Upton.
