Maidenhead Impress at Wallingford LDS Print E-mail
Wednesday, 12 October 2005
Maidenhead’s junior athletes recorded a record number of wins at this year's Wallingford Long Distance Sculls held over a challenging 4000m up-stream course.

Maidenhead won 11 events which included the fastest boys J14 single sculler, boys J15 double sculls, a clean sweep on the girls sculling boats winning WJ14, WJ15, WJ16 and WJ18 singles and double sculls, plus the WJ14 coxed quad won and Bob Wilson (pictured) won Veteran H/I sculls for the over 75.

Wallingford Head is seen as a curtain raiser for all athletes aiming to do well in 2006. This year Wallingford accepted 550 entries from 800 applications. Maidenhead entered athletes ranging from age 13 through to 76 years of age.

Maidenhead's success resulted in Wallingford suggesting that Maidenhead juniors should target another head next year to allow other clubs to win at Wallingford. I assume this was a hidden compliment!

Winning crews for Maidenhead were as follows:

WJ18 2x: Louise Entwistle and Ally Brooks who won this event in 15mins 2s, this winning time placed them as fastest overall senior womens double and 36 seconds ahead of second place crew also from Maidenhead.

WJ16 2x: Sophie Delaney(Wallingford) and Aimee Campbell who won this event in 15mins 57s, 42 seconds ahead of 2nd place Wallingford RC.

WJ15 2x: Rebekah Kerns and Alice Ancora who won this event in 16mins 11s and 18 seconds ahead of second place Maidenhead crew.

MJ15 2x: Alex Ryde and Ertan Hazine won this event in 15mins 9s. A good 20 seconds ahead of second place crew from Latymer School.

MJ14 1x: Robert Ashburner won his age group comfortably in 16mins 42s nearly 2 minutes ahead of two Marlow scullers.

WJ14 1x: Carmel Bevan sculled very well to win in 18mins 28s by an excellent margin over 2nd place Maidenhead sculler.

WJ14 4x+: Hanna Shimmin, Emma Kerns, Anna Campbell, Carmel Bevan with cox Emily Webster sculled well to win in 16mins 1s, 4 seconds ahead of a Henley crew.

WJ15 1x: Alice Ancora won this year's Maidenhead battle in 17mins 32s, second place was also from Maidenhead.

WJ16 1x: Ally Brooks had a few problems overtaking at the start of the head and managed to win in 16mins 54s which also placed her equal second in the higher WJ18 category.

WJ18 1x: Louise Entwistle led from the start and went on to win in 16mins 33s, 21 seconds ahead of second place Maidenhead and Marlow scullers.

Vet H/I 1x: Bob Wilson had a good scull and finished in 19mins 9s which put him ahead of his Wallingford younger apponent who finished in 20mins 5s.

The club also had some noteable high finishes in the form of Womens S3 sculler Vicky Sims finished in 2nd place, 16mins 24s just 4 seconds behind the winner. Natalie Trinder finished in 5th place 16mins 52s.

J18 2x: Max Gerrard and Phil Clapp also finished in 2nd place, 14mins 12s just 4 seconds behind the winners.

WJ18 2x: Laurian Pepper and Caris Marsh finished in 2nd place,  behind the winning Maidenhead 2x. So a great one/two in this tough event.
