Maidenhead entered 19 events in this year’s Henley LDSC on Saturday 5th November 2005. All of the events were on the Henley course from beyond Temple Island down to The Leander club, with the weather continually changing throughout the day, making this 3000m upstream course challenging for even the most experienced scullers and rowers.
The Junior Squads performed magnificently throughout the day to win both the Junior Boys and Junior Girls team events for the best overall time for 3 scullers in separate events:
Boys team was won by Phil Clapp (J16), Sam Ashburner (J18) and Ertan Hazine (J15).
Girls team was won by Louise Entwistle (J18), Ally Brooks (J16) and Katie Lion (J15).
Maidenhead had crews in all 3 divisions and they started their winning ways with the WJ18 4x crew of Ally Brooks, Louise Entwistle, Caris Marsh and Laurian Pepper winning in a time of 12m23s from a crew from St Neots, Cambridge. Following the J18s win, the WJ16 4x crew of Alice Ancora, Katy Lion, Aimee Campbell and Sophie Delaney won in a time of 12m55s from local rivals Marlow and Henley; this WJ16 crew were faster than the second placed St Neots crew in the WJ18 event. The youngest entry in the girls quads was a WJ14 4x+ from the intermediate squad of Henrietta Jenkins, Rebecca Reeve, Emma Kerns, Felicity Young and cox Emily Webster. This crew worked hard to compete the course and finish in 5th place behind strong LEH and Henley crews. The crew, which included three WJ13s, did well to finish 5th in a WJ14 event, with a time of 15m29s.
In Division 1 the sun continued to shine and the doubles followed the quads up the river. Maidenhead crews continued to do well and the first win came in the WJ15 2x event where Rebekah Kerns and Maddie Reynolds, partnering for the first time in a race, won in a time of 15m07s ahead of a strong crew from Lady Eleanor Hollies school, Hampton. In the WJ14 2x the regular combination of Carmel Bevan and Anna Campbell won by 3s from LEH 'C' crew, and new combination Hannah Shimmin and Lucy Brockwell did well to finish 3rd with 2 LEH crews some way behind.
The afternoon brought a change in the weather with the wind picking up and the rain starting as the singles began. The first single win of the afternoon came as GB rower Louise Entwistle sculled powerfully to win WJ18 1x in 14m36s, 10s ahead of Mottram from Marlow. In the WJ16 event Maidenhead had 3 entries: Ally Brooks, Aimee Campbell and Nicky Godbold. Ally sculled an excellent race to win in 14m51s, 2s ahead of Sophie Delaney from Wallingford, who was racing for her previous club. Aimee did well, finishing in 5th place in a time of 15m19s. Nicky, however was 4 strokes from the finish when she capsized! So near, yet so far!
In the WJ15 singles Maidenhead had 4 entries: Alice Ancora, Katy Lion, Rebekah Kerns, and Maddie Reynolds. All girls sculled well, but couldn’t beat the National Champion Natalie Bream from Peterborough City rowing club. Alice and Katy came joint third in a time 15m25s, Rebekah just 2 seconds down at 15m27s, with Maddie finishing in 17m12s.
In the WJ14 event Maidenhead had 3 entries: Carmel Bevan, Anna Campbell, and Hannah Shimmin. Carmel finished 5th in 16m14s, 28s behind the winner, Bruce from LEH. Anna finished 9th in 17m23s and Hannah one place further down in 17m34s.
In the WJ13 singles Maidenhead entered Fifi Bevan and Lexy Dobson, competing in her first ever 3km in a single, but they had no other opposition in the event. Fifi sculled a great race to finish in 17m18s, 25s ahead of Lexy who put in such an effort to finish that she managed to pass over the finish line and then capsize!
Maidenhead also entered WCS athletes Phillipa Cuss in the WN 1x, Phillipa sculled well to finish the course in a time of 16m05s. Nicky Godbold sculled in a WS3 1x and finished in a time of 15m56s.
Intermediate boys win 3 events
The Intermediate boys are beginning to come through and are now winning against good competition.
The boys entered the J15 and J16 doubles and singles events. In Division 1 the J16 boys double of Tim Wildbore and Adam Lilly, sculling in a newly refurbished boat, did extremely well to complete the course and finish only 3s behind the winners from Walton RC.
In the J15 double sculls the Intermediate boys entered two crews. The 'A' crew of Erton Hazine and Robert Ashburner put up an excellent performance to win the event finishing in a time of 13m17s, 17s ahead of second place crew also from Maidenhead, Simon Lilly and Ross McCorriston.
In Division 3 there were 3 boys singles entries consisting of Tim Wildbore at J16, completeing the course in 14m25s, with Erton Hazine at J15, completing the distance in 14m30s, and Robert Ashburner at J14, completing the course in 14m32s.
Well done to all the intermediate boys.
Advanced Junior Men win 2 events
The J18 4x of Max Gerrard, Sam Ashburner, Carl Delaney and Phil Clapp won their event by 40 seconds. The time of 11m01s was the 7th fastest of the day, beaten only by 5 elite quads and a S2 4x.
In the second division Sam Ashburner was 6th in the J18 single sculls with a time of 13m40s (one second faster than Tom Jost who was 3rd in the S3 1x). There were 53 scullers in the J18 event which was won by Carl Delaney, racing for Wallingford, in a magnificent 13m21s.

Finally, Bob Wilson had a good scull to win the Veteran I (over 75 age group) and notch up another win for the veteran section.
