Maidenhead entered crews into 19 events at this year’s Thames Valley Trials on Sunday 29th January. All of the events were rowed over a 1900m course on the Eton rowing lake. As is usual at Dorney, the weather and the wind played their part with the wind gusting so strongly that the boats were being blown on to the pontoons at the start. In Division 1 the wind was at its strongest and coldest, whilst in Divisions 2 and 3 the wind had abated slightly and conditions were marginally easier, although most crews still seemed to come down the course on an angle.

Maidenhead’s junior girls
section entered 14 crews across all divisions and numerous events. In all, the
girls won 4 events - WJ13 4x+, WJ15 2x ,WJ18 4 x, and the WS3 8, and the
boys 2 events the J15 2x, as well as the J18 4x.
The junior boys’ squad entered 7
crews in the J15 and J16 groups. On a day where the wind was the main
competition, they battled hard to bring one first place and two second
places. The J15 coxed quad ‘A’ crew with Rob Ashburner, Ertan Hazine, Alex
Ryde, George Poynter, coxed by M. Compton, rowed well to complete the course in
7min15s to finish 4th. The ‘B’ crew of T. O’Reiley, S. Lilley, A. Hewitt, M.
Cleveland, coxed by M. Compton also rowed well to complete the course in 7min
37s.
The J15 2x had 3 entries; in the ‘A’ crew E. Hazine and A. Ryde
rowed a very fast race of 7min 37s, despite crashing into another quad who were
slow to move aside, to win the category, neither athletes nor boat were damaged.
The ‘B’ crew of S. Lilley and M. Cleveland completed the course in 7min
49s to finish 2nd ,with the ‘C’ crew of G. Poynter and T. O’Reiley completing
the course in 8min 3s to finish 5th.
The J16 group entered 2 crews; The
‘A’ crew of A. Lilley and T. Wildbore rowed very well to complete the course in
7min 27s in second place, behind a Marlow crew by 11 seconds. The ‘B’ crew of R.
Ashburner and T. Wildbore, rowing his second race of the day, completed the
course in 3rd place in a time of 7min 32s, only 5 seconds behind the ‘A’
crew.
In
division 1 the WJ16 4x crew of Alice Ancora, Katie Lion, Sophie Delaney and
Aimee Campbell were on the water first, and they finished in great style as
winners of their event in a time of 7min 37s, nine seconds ahead of a Marlow
crew. The WJ14 4x+ crew of Henrietta Jenkins, Lucy Brockwell, Emily Webster and
Rachel Aldridge, coxed by Felicity Young came down the course next, but with
three of the girls rowing a year up they found the going hard and finished in a
time of 10min 46s. The next Maidenhead girls were the WJ15 2x of
Maddie Reynolds and Aimee Broadbent, and they coped well with the windy
conditions to come home in 5th place in a time of 8min 54s. The WJ14 2x crews
boated next, and with 25 entrants for this event, 14 from Lady Eleanor Hollies,
who were either having a school outing or more likely running pairs trials for
the coming season, they had to scull well to get among the high finishers. Anna
Campbell and Emma Kerns were Maidenhead’s first crew and they finished in 9th
place with a time of 9 min 6s. They were followed down the lake by the two
Bevans, Carmel and Fifi, who did very well to come home in a time of 8 min 44s,
which saw them placed in 2nd spot behind a strong LEH crew. Maidenhead’s
experienced WJ18 4x crew of Ally Brooks, Louise Entwistle, Caris Marsh and
Laurian Pepper sprinted down the course in a great time of 7min 20s to beat
their opposition from Canford School and Dorney by more than a minute in a
devastating display.
Division 2 saw the wind drop a
fraction, but it was still quite strong and very cold with it. The WJ14
4x+ crew of Carmel Bevan, Emma Kerns, Anna Campbell and Hannah Shimmin,
coxed by Katherine Henderson, had a good outing to finish in 5th place out of
ten entrants, in a time of 8min 43s, the winners being a strong LEH crew.
Maidenhead then had a further two entries in the WJ15 2x, the combination of
Rebekah Kerns and Katie Lion proving too strong for all their opposition,
winning the event in a good time of 8min 36s, just pipping a Marlow crew
by one second. Aimee Broadbent then teamed up with Emma Sanerkin in the
same event, finishing in a time of 9min 9s to earn themselves ninth place.
The last crew in the division was another Maidenhead WJ14 2x crew of Rachel
Aldridge and Emily Webster, and they found the going very tough to come home in
a time of 10min 43s.
In division 3, Aimee Broadbent , in
her 3rd race of the day and Beth John in the WJ15 2x finished well in 6th place
with a time of 8min 59s. Maidenhead’s youngest crew of the day then took to the
water in the WJ13 4x+, and Fifi Bevan, Lexy Dobson, Rebecca Reeve and Felicity
Young, coxed by Emily Webster, stormed through the field of thirteen entrants, 9
from Lady Eleanor Hollies School, to win by 50 seconds in a very fine time
of 8min 30s, a time good enough to have finished 3rd in the WJ14
event. There was still time for another Maidenhead WJ14 2x crew of
Henrietta Jenkins and Katherine Henderson to finish 14th in a big field of 25
entrants, with a time of 9min 38s.
