Intermediate Girls Win at Weybridge Head Print E-mail
Friday, 17 March 2006
Maidenhead’s Intermediate Junior Girls entered 2 crews at Weybridge Head on Sunday 12th March. The course stretches 3000m upstream from Miskins Wharf, Walton, to D'Oyly Carte Island, Weybridge. This is a very difficult course to steer, as not only does it twist and turn, but there are bridges to negotiate and finally a long narrow channel to the finish.

In Division 1, the WJ13 crew were forced to row up a year at WJ14 level as there was no opposition in their own age group. Maidenhead’s young crew of  Fifi Bevan, Lexy Dobson, Rebecca Reeve and Henrietta Jenkins, with cox Emma Sanerkin, started the race at a great pace and had overtaken the crew in front within 30 strokes. They continued to race hard with cox Sanerkin pushing her crew to catch the next boat in front.  By the finish they were only 2 lengths behind and then they discovered that they had been catching a WJ15 crew!  Maidenhead won their event easily, beating their two opponents by 4 mins and 5 mins.

In Division 2, Maidenhead’s crew of Emma Sanerkin , Kathryn Henderson, Felicity  Young, and Lucy Brockwell, with cox Rebecca Reeve sculled beautifully along the course to come second to the home club Weybridge. This was the first time this combination had sculled together and although this was a WJ15 event, only one member of the crew was a WJ15, the others being WJ14 and WJ13, showing the current strength and depth of Maidenhead’s Intermediate Girls.
