Four Maidenhead junior athletes were selected to represent GB at one of the toughest International Junior regattas on the International Junior circuit. It was a credit to the club to have these four athletes be selected and face the task of being tested out against some of the best rowing athletes in the World.
The results for each day have been summarised in the tables below. In the tables you will see that the information includes a percentage which is based upon how close the time is compared to the expected Gold Medal winning time at the World Rowing Championship level assuming good conditions. At Munich we had a light head wind on the Saturday and a stronger cross head wind on the Sunday, with glorious hot sunshine both days. All the athletes enjoyed their time there and they would have learnt a great deal from the experience, which they can now take back and help their club crews. Louise Entwistle On the Saturday Louise competed in a heat of JW2x and came second in this heat behind World Champion Scullers from Germany. First place in each heat went through to the A final, second place in each heat put you into the B final, 3rd and lower are knocked out. So, very tough competition and only the top 2 boats progress further. In the B final Louise went on to win this with her partner, Lucy Walczak from Hollingworth Lake in 8m 13s, second was Germany in 8m 16s, third Switzerland 8m 24s. On the Sunday Louise was put in a double with her club mate Ally Brooks and they sculled well in the A heat finishing 4th in a time of 8m 15s and a good overall percentage time. 1st was Romania, 2nd Slovinia, 3rd Switzerland. The main boat for the Sunday was the quad in which all the quad crew members excelled by storming through the last 500m and winning their heat for a place in the A final. This was the first time this had been achieved for some time. In the final the crew raced well to finish in 5th place in a time of 7m 58s. Ally Brooks
On the Saturday Ally competed in a heat of the JW 2x with her partner Charlotte Jefferies from Headington School. They finished 3rd in their heat in a time of 8m 13s which was not enough to qualify for the finals. On the Sunday Ally teamed up with Louise and they raced well in Heat A of the JW 2x finishing a respectable 4th in a good time of 8m 15s. The main focus on the Sunday was the quad and the crew had instruction to race over the 2000m course at 34. This they did and pulled off a good win against a top German crew. In the final, racing was as expected hard and with some doubling up on the day the crew did well to finish in 5th place.
Dave Jones
From the table below you can see that Dave and his partner Robinson from Tideway Scullers raced well on the Saturday to finish in 4th place in a heat of the JM 2x in a time of 7m 19s. The quad was a main boat for the boys on the Saturday and with Carl Delaney unwell, a substitute jumped in the boat on the day for the race. This quad raced well and finished in 2nd place in their heat in a time of 6m 48s. On the Sunday Dave raced again in the quad this time with a new substitute on board where they finished in 12th place in a time of 7m 03s. Carl Delaney Carl raced in his single scull and against some very tough competition he was holding 2nd position at 1000m, but began to feel unwell. Carl kept going for another 500m, holding second place but then suffered from lack of oxygen to his body, which forced him to scull in lightly the last 400m. This put Carl out of the quad race planned later in the day. On the Sunday Carl recovered enough to race in a double scull where he finished 9th with Collins of Walton RC in a time of 7m 35s. Carl was not well enough to race in the quad on the Sunday.
