Maidenhead Novice women entered their first regatta at Reading on Saturday 10 June and Sunday 11 June 2006 in the WN4+ category. The crew comprising of Natasa Lakovic, Sarah Heczko, Rosemary Elder and Gillian Kidd, and coxed by Dawn Davies, enjoyed a good day on Saturday competing over the 1500m downstream course, beating crews from Southampton University, Bristol University, and University College Dublin to make it through to the final where they came in runners-up to a strong Reading University crew. The Sunday saw a few changes to the crew with Nicki Evans taking the place of Rosemary Elder and the girls coach Howard Boyce stepping in to cox the shorter 1100m downstream course. The crew beat Reading Rowing Club in the first round but tired legs took their toll as the girls lost out in the second round to the Univeristy of Bristol crew whom they had beaten convincingly the previous day. The Intermediate Women's crew of Louisa Sutherland-Spiller, Anna McIntyre, Hannah Chatham and Kay Fullick, and coxed by Helen Jacobs, made it through 3 rounds into the WN4+ final but were narrowly beaten by University College Dublin. The two squads combined to race in the WN8+ category but unfortunately went out in the first round against Curlew Rowing Club.
The Women's Squad is encouraged by their performance over the weekend and look forward to further competitions over the summer.
Friday sees the start of Henley Women's Regatta where Maidenhead has an interest in 8 crews entered into this prestigious event: A Senior 2x, an Intermediate 4+ and 8+ plus an athlete in a composite 4+, a Junior 4x, two Junior 2x's and an athlete in a composite Junior 4+. |
