Maidenhead's representation at Henley Royal Regatta ended in the final minutes of Saturday afternoon when the Quad were knocked out in the semi-final of the Fawley Challenge Cup by King's School, Parramatta, Australia who went on to win the competition.
It was the second year running that a composite crew with 2 Maidenhead athletes had won through to the semi-finals of the Fawley Cup. David Jones and Phil Clapp teamed up with 2 scullers from Leander and Tideway Scullers School and were tipped to do well. However, as in previous years, visiting Australian crews proved themselves to be very strong opposition.
Maidenhead forced King's School to race hard right from the word go, and hard they did race, equalling the course record to the barrier in 1:55. Sculling just a little more tightly, the Australian crew drew out a 1 length lead by Fawley Meadows which they maintained until the finish, crossing the line in 6:50, 6 seconds faster than the following second semi-final.
