6 Wins and Team Pennant at Henley Sculling Head Print E-mail
Sunday, 05 November 2006
Maidenhead Rowing Club competed in eighteen events at Henley Sculls on Saturday 4th November and put up some excellent performances to come away with six Class wins. This timed head of the river event is held over a 3,000m upstream Henley Royal regatta course with a good standard of competition. It was a fairly bright day, warm and dry. There was a light wind and the course conditions were good. We also had a number of second places in classes, Maidenhead showing even at this early season head that crews are aiming to do well this season.

Maidenhead’s 6 Wins came from:

1. WJ18 Quad Scull of Aimee Campbell, Katie Lion, Louise Entwistle and Ally Brooks who powered down the course overtaking two quads and finishing in a fast time of 11min 58s which was faster than the winning WS2 Quad. An excellent result, beating by 13 seconds the Henley RC crew that represented GB last year and won everything. So a good sign as we build up to the Fours Head.

2. J18 Double Scull of Ertan Hazine only 16 and Adam Lilley impressed by winning this boat class by 6 seconds from Stourport BC and in a time of 12min 8s.

3. The WJ14 Double Scull of Fifi Bevan and Gabby Watson continued to show that they are a leading double at this age group by winning their class by a massive 52 seconds from UTRC, finishing the course in 14min 10s.

4. Vicky Sims partnered with a Reading Rowing Club sculler in Women's Elite Double Sculls and went on to record a win in this class finishing in a time of 12min 48s.

5. In the WJ14 Single Sculls event Gabby Watson won this class by 6 seconds from her doubles partner Fifi Beven, finishing in an excellent time of 15min 21s. Both these Maidenhead scullers finished over 20 seconds ahead of their nearest rivals.

6. The final win came from young Jack Beaumont who competed in J13 Single Sculls and after a good scull Jack was pleased to learn that his time of 15min 59s placed him 9 seconds ahead of Seager of Reading RC.

Junior Boys
Another excellent result came from the boys J16 Quad who finished in 2nd place at J16 level but equalled the winning J18 quad's time. So a good effort from Ross McCoriston, Simon Lilley, George Poynter and Robert Ashburner.

Robert Ashburner also performed well to take 2nd place in a time of 13min 43s from a large field of J15 Single Scullers. A fast St Neots sculler won this class.

Adam Lilley moved up to Senior 3 Sculls and finished in 9th place in a time of 13min 31s.

Ertan Hazine had a good scull but struggled in places to overtake slower scullers in the stream. Despite this Ertan clocked up a good time of 13min 16s to take 4th place in this J16 class. Tom O’Reilly finished in a time of 14min 54s to take 22nd place and George Poynter who picked up some weed on his boat fin managed to complete the course in 15min 10s to take 24th place.

Tim Wildbore competed at J18 level and finished in a time of 13min 20s to be placed 14th. Michael Compton also competed in this division and finished in a time of 14min 10s to be placed 47th.

A young boys J15 Quad of Sam McCorriston, Tom Leverington, Brad Halloran and George West coxed by Emily Beaumont sculled the course well to finish in a time of 13min 42s and to be placed 10th in their class.

The Single Scull Team Prizes were awarded to teams who had the lowest cumulative time from 3 age catagories.

The overall Junior Boys Team pennant was won by Maidenhead's team of: Tim Wildbore (J18), Ertan Hazine (J16), and Robert Ashburner (J15) by having the lowest cumulative time when all their times were added together.

Senior Crews
Roland Peters entered the Novice Sculls division and finished in 8th place in a time of 13min 50s.

Junior Girls
Katie Lion had a good scull in the J16 Singles division and she managed to steer the course well and overtake a number of scullers and to finish in second place, just 7 seconds behind a tidy sculler from Henley in a time of 14min 11s. Alice Ancora finished in 10th place in a time of 15min 01s; Aimee Broadbent finished in 15th place in a time of 15min 23s and Rebekah Kerns finished in 20th place in a time of 15min 33s.

Fifi Bevan finished J14 Sculls in second place just behind her club mate Watson and 20 seconds ahead of 3rd place.

Carmel Bevan finished J15 Sculls in 3rd place after in a fast time of 14min 58s. Anna Campbell also competing in J15 Sculls finished in 20th place in a time of 16min 19s.

Aimee Campbell competing in J18 Sculls finished in 15th place in a time of 15min 15s.

Maidenhead’s WJ16 Quad, who have half the crew just returning to competition after illness, did well to finish in 3rd place in a time of 13min 10s.The quad comprised of Anna Campbell, Aimee Broadbent, Rebekah Kerns, Alice Ancora.

A composite J15 Double Scull of Walton and Maidenhead (Carmel Bevan) had an encounter with the bank, but they finished in 3rd place in a time of 14min 11s.
