Maidenhead Rowing Club’s very successful High Performance Junior squad have excelled themselves in the past six months by winning a number of top National and International honours.
The Junior Women's quadruple sculling crew (pictured) won the Fullers Fours Head of the River race for a second year in a row, but more importantly, in a time that was only 8 seconds behind a senior winning crew that had World U23 medalists on board.
The girls, pictured left to right, are Aimee Campbell (J17) who was selected to row for Scotland, Katie Lion (J16) who was selected to represent GB at a J16 match against France, Louise Entwistle (J18) who won a double Gold at the European Championships and Ally Brooks (J17) who was selected for the France match and also won a Bronze medal at the European Champs.
These athletes are some of the core members of a local Maidenhead squad and members of the GB junior and U23 squads who are training six days a week working towards selection for International Junior and U23 events in 2007. Longer term we hope to see a few local athletes make the 2012 Olympic team at Dorney Lake.
The junior High Performance group continue to seek sponsors for 2007 as the local athletes who compete at GB level are required to attend approximately 10 GB training camps a year at an individual cost of £250 each camp. With International events planned for Italy and Beijing in 2007 the competition costs and travelling costs will increase. If there are any interested local sponsors who would like to help these young athletes achieve their maximum potential then please make contact with the Captain of Juniors at Maidenhead Rowing Club – email:

Three Maidenhead athletes were selected to attend the first ever National Talent Orientation Camp for J16/J17’S held at Loughborough University from 6th January to 9th January. The four days working with the Youth Sport Trust was to focus on “What does it take to become the best?” The programme included information on decisions young athletes need to make to ensure they can excel in their sport, in their lives and in their education. These young athletes had the opportunity to mix with other athletes from cycling, triathlon, sailing and canoeing and to carry out intensive land training together. Olympic medalists were involved in this programme to help inspire these young athletes through to the 2012 Olympics. |
