3 Maidenhead Quads Compete at Henley Royal Regatta Print E-mail
Friday, 29 June 2007
Maidenhead has representation within three quads entered in the Fawley Cup for school/junior quads at Henley Royal Regatta this year. Two of these were pre-qualified, with Phil Clapp sculling in a Henley composite and Adam Lilley sculling in a Marlow composite.

The J16 quad of Alex Ryde and Ertan Hazine sculling with Alex Torbica and Craig Turner of Maidstone as a composite and also the Maidenhead J16/17 quad of Ross McCoriston, Tim Wildbore, George Poynter and Robert Ashburner qualified in the time trials held last Friday.

The quads started next to each other in the time trial race order but there were thirty second gaps between the crews. Both quads had to finish in the top nine from thirty eight crews in the qualifying time trial. There were four known fast crews who had competed at Marlow International and also three crews from USA and Ireland that had to qualify through the time trials.

The Maidenhead quad stroked by Robert Ashburner started at a rate of about 38 and settled to 34. Steered by Ross McCoriston they used local knowledge to avoid the stream as much as possible. The pushes at The Barrier, Remenham and into the Enclosures went well. They were very pleased to  qualify for the main regatta with eight other crews.

The composite quad with Maidstone had lacked mileage together. They found it difficult to get a comfortable fast scull and achieve a suitably high rate for a quad. They pushed hard at the agreed marks but didnt look like a settled crew. They missed selection for the main regatta by about two seconds and were left to reflect on what might have been. They are now concentrating on their main events of the season of a pair, double and four at the Anglo France trials to be held at Nottingham on Tuesday 10th July. The Maidenhead quad will also be at these trials.

Both of these quads have another two potential years to compete in the Fawley Cup event.

The first races for the Fawley Cup are on Thursday.
