2 Wins at Marlow International Regatta Print E-mail
Friday, 22 June 2007
Maidenhead's Junior Girls Squad achieved 2 good wins at Marlow International Regatta, held over the 2000m course at Dorney Lake on Saturday 23rd June. Fifi Bevan, Gabby Watson and Carmel Bevan combined with Sophie Wedlake and cox Holly Jones from Walton RC in the WJ15 Coxed Quads to win their straight final. Later in the day, Maddie Reynolds and Aimee Broadbent teamed together with 2 athletes from Henley RC to win the WJ16 Quads.

The WJ15 Coxed Quad competition became a straight final with Maidenhead entering two composite crews, one with Walton and one with Claires Court School. The Walton composite of Fifi Bevan, Gabby Watson, Carmel Bevan and Sophie Wedlake (Walton RC) with cox Holly Jones (Walton RC) led from the start but were closely tracked by Star club for the first 500m. They steadily pulled away in the second 500m and after maintaining their lead in the third 500m, they accelerated away at the finish to win by a 10 second margin. Henley RC were in third place. The Maidenhead/Claire's Court composite of Anna Campbell, Katherine Henderson, Polly Rider and Millie Clark (the latter two from Claire's Court), coxed by Zoë Broadbent, sculled steadily but had problems raising the stroke rate and finished 4th.

In the WJ16 Coxless Quad Maidenhead entered a composite crew with two girls from Henley RC. This turned out to be a two horse race after Marlow withdrew. The crew, including  Maddie Reynolds and Aimee Broadbent from Maidenhead pulled away to a fast start and at halfway this had been increased to one length. The crew withstood a charge in the second half to win a tight finish against an all-Henley RC crew by approx half a length.

The WJ14 Coxed Quad of Felicity Young, Henrietta Jenkins, Rachel Aldridge, Lexy Dobson and cox Zoë Broadbent had a straight final against crews from Marlow, Borlase School and Newark, to whom they had already lost twice this year. Maidenhead started slowly but picked up speed at the 1000m mark and continued to push the Newark crew hard all the way to the line losing by only 2.5 seconds. This was an improvement on their last meeting at the Junior Inter Regional Regatta at Nottingham, when they were over 4 seconds adrift. Marlow RC were 5 seconds behind in 3rd place.

Boys Results - Junior 16/18 Boys  J2-, J18 4x, J16 4x, J16 2x.

The new coxless pair combination or Alex Ryde and Ertan Hazine were trying out a new boat and had arguably the best result of the section with a fourth place in J18 Pairs having won their heat in fine style. This was planned as experience before J16 Anglo trials, having won a bronze medal at National Schools. The impressive fact was that the boys progressed directly to the final by winning their heat. During the day they beat several  pairs who are in J18 GB final trials. The winners were from Eton who competed in last years World championships who are no longer FISA juniors but do qualify under ARA junior rules for domestic regattas.

The pair also combined for the day with Craig Turner and Alex Torbica of Maidstone Invicta in a J18 quad even though all members are J16s.

The J16 Quad of Ross McCorriston, Simon Lilley, George Poynter and Robert Ashburner won their semi final in style. The expected race against Evesham and Windsor Boys developed in the final, with Maidenhead being just over a length off winning at the end behind Windsor who won.

The quad then split into J16 doubles for their final race where Marlow won with the Maidenhead boys second and third.

Overall encouraging results but with no silverware to show for the boys at the end of the day.
