The Intermediate Girls and Boys entered several events at Egham Regatta on Sunday 1st July. Due to recent rains and consequent stronger river flow, the course was shortened by 50m to 550m to move the start further from the weir. The course initially appears straight, but there is a deceptive early bend and another at the finish which caused several crew clashes as tired competitors ploughed into each other. The Intermediate Girls squad recorded their first win of the season in the WJ13 Double Sculls whilst the WJ13 boys recorded a win in a composite Quad Scull crew with Reading RC.
WJ14 single sculls Maidenhead had three entries. Megan Haines in her first regatta in a single raced well but lost out by just under a length in her heat. Kate Ryde's heat was possibly the closest race of the day which she won by two feet from Reading RC but she then lost out by a similarly close race to Eton Excelsior in the second round. Chesca Knowles' regatta was unfortunately cut short when a problem with her feet led to her steering going awry from the start and she collided with a moored barge and fell in.
WJ13 double sculls Maidenhead entered two crews in this competition. Gina Longman rowed with Hannah Wallace - a late replacement from the beginners group. Despite this being their first time in the boat together the sculled well but were outpowered in their heat by the Sir William Perkins School 'D' crew.

The other Maidenhead crew, Emily Birch and Zoe Broadbent (pictured above), recorded the Intermediate Girls' first win of the season. They won their heat against Eton Excelsior by about a length. The semi-final was a tight race. Coming into the final stages, Maidenhead had their bow ball in front when the Putney High School crew crew went straight on in the final bend cutting into the stern of Maidenhead crew. Putney were ordered by the umpire to stop rowing to avoid a collision, which effectively ended the race in Maidenhead's favour.
Emily and Zoe reserved their best performance for the final against Sir William Perkins School 'C' crew. Assisted by steering a perfect course they steadily drew away and by the halfway point it was apparent that they only had to hold their form to win, which they went on to do by a margin of three lengths. Not only was this the first win for the group this season, it was also a first win (other than for coxing) for either of the girls. To complete their day, their winners tankards were presented by Di Ellis, Chairman of the Amateur Rowing Association.
WJ13 coxed quad The two WJ13 double sculls crews combined in this crew and were coxed by Emily Beaumont. However, perhaps due to their earlier exertions n the doubles, the crew were outpowered in their heat against Sir William Perkins School.
WJ15 single scull Elizabeth Graham recorded her first win in a single in the first round winning convincingly against Putney High School. In the second round she lost to a very fine sculler from Eton Excelsior.
WJ14 Double scull Megan Haines and Kate Ryde sculled well in their heat but came up against a fine crew from Henley RC and progressed no further
WJ16 Double scull Due to a late substitution, this crew consisted of Megan Haines (rowing up two years) and Elizabeth Graham (rowing up one year). The heat was their first time in a boat together, but they sculled beautifully together but were unable to match the strength of their older opponents from Upper Thames RC.
J15 Double Sculls The crew of Sam McCoriston and Brad Halloran lost in the first round.
Nick Brett and Tom Leverington have only had an hour together in this combination and boat before this race but despite the lack of time together rowed very maturely and won some excellent races against some strong competition from rowing schools to progress through to the final. Here they fought a hard race, losing out to Windsor Boys School narrowly. An excellent performance which show promise for the future.
J15 Coxed Quad The crew of Phil Roberts, Andrew Smithson, George West, Will Harris, and cox Emily Beaumont lost their heat (which was also a semi-final) to Burway RC.
J14 Double Scull Matt Granger and Stephan Blakeslee rowed exceptionally well to win the heats to get through to the semi-final. Here they met a strong crew from Henley Rowing Club and were neck and neck all the way down the course until the last 25 metres where they were caught out by the staggered finish losing only by 1/3 length. This was one of the most exciting and hard fought races of the whole day. A credit to both Matt and Stephan that they were able to keep the pressure on Henley right through the race as they had both competed in a J14 coxed quad composite with Reading Rowing Club earlier in the day also progressing through to the semi-finals.
J14 Coxed Quad In a composite with Reading RC Matthew Granger, Stephan Blakeslee lost in the semi-final.
J13 Coxed Quad Jack Beaumont (pictured below) competed in his established composite with Reading RC and progressed to the final which they won easily against Dulwich College. This crew continues to dominate their age group with another comprehensive win.
