Wallingford Regatta: Two wins, two second place finishes Print E-mail
Thursday, 05 June 2008

ImageSeveral Maidenhead junior crews competed at Wallingford Regatta on Sunday 5th May at Dorney Lake, recording two wins and two second place finishes.

The event is the first major regatta of the season and is now the biggest one-day regatta in the UK, with 6 lane races every five minutes over 11 hours. Wallingford now uses the full 2000m course and is considered one of the most competitive regattas of the season. Conditions were generally good, but with a cross head wind varying during the day and making times generally slow.

The Maidenhead WJ15 Coxed Quad of Felicity Young, Henrietta Jenkins, Megan Haines and Lexy Dobson raced their heat and came third, several lengths behind the powerful-looking 'A' crew from Lady Eleanor Holles (LEH) School. The LEH 'B' crew won the second heat.

In the final, Maidenhead got a good start and were level with the leaders after 100 metres. Continuing to push, they gained a canvas advantage after 250 metres and then stretched this to 3/4 of a length at 500m. Over the rest of the course, the chasing pack made no impact as Maidenhead steadily extended their lead to a length and a quarter coming to the last 500m. As the LEH 'A' crew pushed back to a length, Maidenhead raised the rate to scull away in the last 250m to win by a convincing 6 seconds. For Megan Haines, this was a first ever regatta win and for the rest of the crew it was a repeat of last year's win at WJ14 level.

WJ16 2x
In the WJ16 event - a straight 5 boat final - there were two Maidenhead representatives. Fifi Bevan and Gabby Watson were a close second after 500m, were practically level with the leaders, Walbrook & Teddington Schools, at the half way point and in the second half, their relentless power showed and they stretched away to a convincing 16 second win. The double of Frankie Lovely and Sophie Wedlake were competitive in the first 500m, but then faded coming towards the half way point and finished in fourth.

J18 4x-
In the Mens J18 Quads event there were two Maidenhead crews. In a straight and exciting final, the Maidenhead 'A' crew (Adam Lilley, Alex Ryde, Ertan Hazine, Robert Ashburner) had a fast start and were just half a second behind the leaders, Sir William Borlase School, after 500m. These two crews were in adjacent lanes and Maidenhead stayed in touch all the way down the course as Borlase gained a two second lead. In the last 500m, Maidenhead pushed hard and narrowed the gap finishing just over a second behind Borlase, with Marlow RC in third, six seconds behind and with the Maidenhead/Claire's Court composite (Ross McCorriston, George Poynter, Tim Wildbore, Harry Hyman (CC)) a further five seconds behind Marlow in fourth.

WS2 1x
Ally Brooks - still a junior - entered the women's senior 2 single sculls. In a straight final, Ally was narrowly in second place after 500m with Macadie from Agecroft RC well ahead. Ally had a close fight for second place for most of the way down the course against van Leemputten from Upper Thames RC, staying narrowly ahead until she extended her advantage in the last 500m, finishing in second place, 16 seconds behind Agecroft and six seconds ahead of Upper Thames.

WJ18 4+
The WJ18 coxed four, racing against considerably more experienced school sweep oar boats, finished fifth behind winners Headington School in a straight final.

WJ16 4x-
The WJ16 Quad (Fifi Bevan, Gabby Logan, Frankie Lovely, Sophie Wedlake), came third in their heat, qualifying for the final, in which they finished fifth behind Sir William Borlase School who won in a very close finish from Star Club.

WS2 2x
In the women's senior 2 double sculls, Ally Brooks and Vickie Sims won their heat and, in a highly competitive final finished third behind Henley RC and Vesta RC.
