Goring Gap Boat Club invited Maidenhead to compete in the 'eights challenge' at the Goring and Streatley regatta, 19th July 08. A number of beginner crews from local clubs competed at the regatta - a fun event where novices row in front of a crowd of 3-4k! The racing was over 500m, and Goring supplied the boats. Maidenhead entered two mixed eights as well as men's coxed 4, a mixed coxed 4 and a single scull event.
Maidenhead won two cups for : Mixed Coxed Four (Experienced) – Arthur Salter Memorial Trophy Peter Mutch (Stroke), Gilly Messing, Marc Feary, Katie Hepworth Single Sculls (Beginners) – Denys Hutchings Trophy Marcus Richards As well as the Consolation Palate for : Men’s Coxed Four Marcus Richards (Stroke), Paul Milton, Arnon Meshoulam, Phelim Daniels
Marcus did well to win all his single sculling races and the men’s coxed four crew who rowed three races on the trot to win them all, the last by 6 lengths, was a great achievement. Well done too to the mixed four who won all their races against some stiff competition. The eights did well too and the learn to rowers from this year put in a great performance to lose by just a length to a crew that had been training as a crew for 5 months from Derby. Even better to come home having won two cups and one plate and some won pots as well so let’s hope for lots more wins in the future. Many thanks too for Marcus for agenda with Goring and also special thanks to Dawn and family for coxing and training all up to compete at this event. Thanks to Julie for getting a Gazebo spot too and hopefully some great video. Also to Anne for her help in lending a hand with the coaching which of course was invaluable especially for the learn to rowers.
A great day out and some good performances by all with some stiff competition as well, especially the Derby crew. More photos and video at http://recsquad.myphotoalbum.com
