Several Maidenhead Rowing Club girls crews were selected to represent the Thames Up River Region at the Amateur Rowing Association Junior Inter-regional Regatta, held in Nottingham on Saturday 18th April. Racing over a 6-lane 2000m course at the National Watersports Centre, crews competed against the other 11 ARA regions. Conditions were windy, but fair, as the wind was straight down the course, resulting in large waves towards the finish.
Every Maidenhead Girl came away with at least one bronze medal.
Thames Upriver weren't able to repeat their overall win from last year,
coming a close third behind the Northwest and Thames Down River.
WJ15 Coxed Four The crew of Emily Birch, Zoe Broadbent, Grace
Alington and Hannah Wallace, coxed by Ella Campbell came third in their heat,
but in the third fastest time overall. The final was an exciting race with three
crews fighting for the lead. The Maidenhead crew eventually finished in bronze
position closely behind the Thames Down-river and Eastern Crews.
WJ16 Coxless Quad The crew of Henrietta Jenkins, Megan
Haines, Kate Ryde and Lexy Dobson sculled a poor heat, but nevertheless reached
the final as the fifth fastest crew. Their final performance was much improved,
winning a bronze medal behind powerful crews from Eastern (Star Club, Bedford)
and North West (Runcorn RC).
The WJ16 Eight This crew was a Maidenhead RC/Henley RC
composite as neither club had enough WJ16 girls for an eight on their own. Both
crews had earlier won bronze medals in their respective events (Maidenhead -
Quad Sculls and Henley - Coxed Four), so they were already pretty tired.
Despite only having one practice session in this line-up, the Eight of
Henrietta Jenkins, Charlotte Mills (Henley), Amy Fitzgibbon (Henley) Kate Ryde,
Beccy Norman (Henley), Jess Gough (Henley), Megan Haines and Lexy Dobson coxed
by Maddie Reynoldsfinished second in their heat in the fourth fastest time
overall. No doubt benefiting from having increased their outings together by a
factor of two by rowing in the heat, they raced to an impressive third place in
the final behind very polished-looking winners Molesey RC representing Thames
Downriver.
WJ15 Double Scull The crew of Emily Birch and Zoe
Broadbent came fourth in their heat so didn't reach the A final. In the B final,
they came second, nevertheless earning valuable points for the team.
