A large contingent of Maidenhead RC juniors and veterans competed at Marlow Spring Regatta on Bank Holiday Monday 4th May. The course was 900m downstream with a bend at the finish which makes it difficult to know when you've crossed the line. The weather was a mixture of sun, wind and rain.
Juniors The only junior girls' entry, the WJ15 coxed quad of Emily Birch, Zoe Broadbent, Grace Alington and Hannah Wallace, coxed by Ella Campbell, won their event in two hard fought races. They beat Sir William Perkins school by a length in their heat, despite a poor start. In the 3-boat final, they fought back from a half length deficit from Lady Eleanor HollesSchool in the last 250m, to win by half a length, with Marlow Rowing Club in third place.
Three boys crews reached finals but, unfortunately, none won their event.
Veterans The Maidenhead Veteran E Coxless Four of Orlando Fricker, Steve Janisch, Ken Bedwell and Gareth Jones won the combined (i.e. raced with a time handicap) Vet C/D/E event beating Marlow RC (Vet D) narrowly in the first round, but with a comfortable win over Walton (Vet C) in the final.
The Veteran Novice Coxed Four crew (Paul Holmes, Jamie Broadbent, Tim Oldham, Mark Hopper & cox Zoe Broadbent) held off Upper Thames to win their event by half a length.
