Two Maidenhead Rowing Club Juniors win gold at pan-European event Print E-mail
Monday, 10 August 2009

ImageTwo Maidenhead RC Juniors Rob Ashburner and Alice Ancore, represented Great Britain in the 12 European nation Coupe de la Jeunesse held in Vichy, France, on the 1st and 2nd August. Both won two gold medals.

Maidenhead RC's Tom Jost also was selected to coach the Junior men's double scull at this event. His crew won a silver and a bronze medal.

Sculling in the GB junior men's quad on the Saturday, Rob's crew won by a length from second placed Poland and third placed Ireland. On the Sunday, Rob again raced in the quad - this time his crew were even more dominant, pulling out a two length lead by the 1000m mark which they maintained in the second half of the race to finish ahead of Poland in second place again and Italy in third.

Sculling in the GB junior women's quad, Alice's crew won comfortably by two lengths on the Saturday ahead of Poland in second place and Switzerland in third. On Sunday, they faced a much tougher challenge and were only in fourth place with 500m gone. At halfway (1000m), they were still only in third place, pulling up to second place with 500m to go, before finally snatching the lead in a gutsy effort, only ten strokes before the finish, with the Swiss in second and Italy in third.

Rob and Alice's efforts helped Great Britain win the overall event for the second year running.
