MARLOW FOURS AND PAIRS Print E-mail
Wednesday, 23 December 2009

Marlow Pairs and Fours Head was held on Sunday 22nd November over a shortened 1900m course at Dorney Lake, as work on the river section where it is normally held made racing on the river impractical. Despite the name, single sculls events were also included. The day started sunny and calm, but strong wind and rain affected the second division and the beginning of the third before conditions calmed down again.

Boys

Lewis Morgan won the J14 single sculls in 9 min 19.9 seconds with fellow Maidenhead sculler Oliver Palmer in second place. These two then combined in the J14 double sculls and, despite atrocious conditions, won in by nearly 30 seconds from Marlow RC in second place. The J17 double sculls crew of Matt Granger and Josh Lee, racing for the first time together, also won their event, 8 seconds ahead of Guildford.

Unfortunately timing errors by the officials meant that the three J15 1x scullers did not get reliable times. However it was clear that Michael Corio had pushed the event winner close.

Girls

There were some excellent results from the girls. In the first division, in calm conditions, the WJ16 Quad of Zoe Broadbent, Emily Birch, Grace Alington and Hannah Wallace won their event in 7min 59.9, nearly six seconds ahead of Sir William Perkins School with Kings School Worcester in third place. Kate Ryde won the WJ17 single sculls in 9:34.1, just one second ahead of her team mate Megan Haines in second.

Three of the WJ16 girls raced again in single sculls in contrasting conditions of wind and rain in the second division. Zoe Broadbent won the event in 10 minutes 22.7 with Hannah Wallace in third and Grace Alington in 5th position.

In the third division, the Maidenhead WJ17 quad of Henrietta Jenkins, Kate Ryde, Megan Haines and Lexy Dobson raced early in the worst conditions but still won their event in 7:44.0, 15 seconds ahead of Kings School Worcester in second place.

Men

The Maidenhead men's Intermediate 2 coxless four crew of Paul Hoyle, Nathan Clarke, Matthew Edmundson and Phil Lawton won their event in 6:58.1 - the fastest time of the day - just 0.8 seconds ahead of Exeter University and 2.6 seconds ahead of Reading Blue Coat in third.

Women

The Maidenhead women's squad was represented in the Intermediate 3 coxed fours by Jo Bennett, Hayley Peters, Erica Moon, Tracey Mellelieu and cox Lexy Dobson. Racing in the second division they faced the some of worst the weather of the day with a gusting cross wind and torrential rain, to finish 2nd place in their category of nine competitors with a time of 9:07, 20 seconds behind winners Marlow.
