The development
men's squad was formed in October 2002. This squad is the competitive link from
our "learn2row" course, to the senior men's squad. Its aims are to develop
members that have just graduated from learn2row or that have a little rowing
experience, and turn them into more experienced and fitter senior men's squad
members with the long term aim of going for Henley Royal
Regatta.
To graduate from the development men's squad, members will
have to have reached senior 4 level or above in terms of rowing points. This is
achieved by winning Novice level races. In addition and subject to fitness and
improvements in technique, members may request to be moved up to the senior
men's squad without achieving a novice victory. This is left to the discretion
of the coaches.
Spring Training – Start of 2008 Regatta Season
The squad trains 4 - 6
times per week, using a combination of boats, rowing machines, weights and
running or cycling. Now that the clocks have gone back and we have lighter
evenings, most of our sessions are now spent on the river, in a combination of
fours and single sculls.
Within the development men's squad there is a
selection process for the racing crews. This year crews have been selected on an
ongoing basis by clearly defined ergo tests and single sculling trials, keeping
the squad on their toes!
