Maidenhead Rowing Club sent along 14 junior athletes (7 boys and 7 girls) to compete in the Bedford inaugural Biathlon organised by Bedford Modern School on Sunday 16th January 2005. The event offered athletes an opportunity to compete on the ergometers followed immediately by a run.
For the J14’s and J15’s this was a 3000m ergo and a 3000m run and for the J16 and J18 athletes this was a 5000m ergo followed by a 5000m run. This was a very challenging task for all competitors learning how to pace the ergo and manage the immediate transition from the ergo to the run.
A Grand prize of a new Concept 2 model D ergometer was the prize to be awarded to both the top boys and top girls team from the school/club with the fastest cumulative time for four competitors, with one competitor from each age group (J14, J15, J16, J18). Maidenhead competed for both the boys and girls team prizes and came away with some excellent individual boys and girls performances. In the team competition the boy’s team came third and the girls team won by a very convincing margin.
The total biathlon time recorded was from the start of the ergometer piece to when the athlete crosses the finish line of the run.
Maidenhead Rowing Club overall results were impressive finishing overall winners and in some case 2nd in age groups.
