Maidenhead’s
Women’s Squad is now firmly established on the local rowing scene. Our
membership continues to increase, and we still welcome rowers of all levels –
and all ages. We also welcome those who are interested in coxing – so if you
like being bossy – give us a call, and we will provide the training. We
generally look after our coxes VERY well – buying them breakfast after early
morning outings, for example!
Experienced rowers will
generally be able to row in a crew fairly quickly, whilst those who are new to
rowing go through our 6 week ‘Learn 2 Row” course. Upon completion of Learn 2
Row, and subject to fitness levels, the novice rower is invited to join our
development women’s squad (please see the development women’s page) To enter the
senior women’s squad a slightly higher level of fitness and sculling competency
is required. Please enquire with the Captain on the current competency
levels. There are
opportunities to row, whether you are a ‘recreational rower’ looking to row for
the sheer pleasure, or a dedicated competitor – prepared to commit to regular
training.
2003 Once again, we have had a busy season – entering a number of Head races following our
winter training. The WS2 Eight finished a creditable 74th from a
start number of 169 in the Womens Head of the River.
Our main focus for the
Summer Regatta season has been Womens Henley, where we had 2 crews entered in
Club Fours. Both crews rowed well, with the ‘A’ crew coming up against a strong
Canadian crew in the second round, and the ‘B’ crew were unfortunately beaten by
1 foot – also in the second round.
Crews at all
status levels – from Novice through to S2 have enjoyed success in other Regattas
– including Reading Amateur,
Llandaff, (where we always enjoy the Saturday party!), and again at
Maidenhead, on a blistering hot Saturday.
Most Squad members are
now fitting in some well-earned holidays, before starting to look towards Winter
training – although there are still members to be found out sculling most days –
including the ‘Sunrise Club’ – who are out on the water a couple of times a week
at 6am! As
the squad continues to grow in numbers and competency, the competition for crews
increases – as does our level of success, so we look forward to a hard – but
rewarding Head season.
Want to join us? Our doors are always open to any experienced rower (or sculler) that
has competed at Senior 4 level or above. Please feel free to browse through the
membership section and if you are interested in joining, contact the captain,
Eric Sims, details on the contacts page.
