The Maidenhead MJ15 quad of Matt Reeves, Sam Prosser, Adam Lilley and Marcus Clover coxed by Jasper van der Valk scored an impressive win at the Hampton Fours’ and Eights’ Head on 29th January. Despite colliding with another crew they came home in 9 m 52s - 17 seconds ahead of second boat Claire’s Court A.
The Maidenhead MJ14 quad of Tom O’Reilly, Matt Powell, James Henderson and Robert Ashburner coxed by Ross Mc Corriston came third in the MJ14 category in a time of 11.05 behind crews from Reading Bluecoats, and Latymer. The boys sculled well in this first outing together.
The Intermediate girls, rowing up a year, finished 5th out of 12 in 11min 23sec. They were a little disappointed but pleased to see that they had beaten the CC WJ15 4x+ entry by 51 seconds. The Maidenhead girls were Anna Campbell, Carmel Bevan, Maddie Reynolds, Lucy Brockwell, cox Fifi Bevan.
There were 184 entries in this prestigious event including 70 eights and octuples. River conditions were good for the race but the crews had long waits in the cold, damp weather and did well to maintain good morale.
This event had its ups and downs. The up was definitely the free rowers' teas, with home made cakes. The downs were the hanging around from 11am until gone 3pm to boat. Apparently, racing was halted at one point to accommodate a large barge making its way, slowly, down the centre of the course and this coupled with a record entry of nearly 200 meant things took much longer than planned.
Many Thanks to information supplied by my roving reporters.
