Learn to Row
Maidenhead Rowing Club invites you to try your hand at rowing

Maidenhead Rowing Club run Learn To Cox courses, which are equally suitable for those who have already rowed and/or coxed a little, and those who have never coxed before and fancy giving it a go.

The courses take the following format:

  • Introduction evening: If you are brand new to the sport and/or club, the first session will include an introduction to the sport of rowing and to the club, outlining how it is run and the facilities on offer, as well as introducing the coxing programme itself. This will normally be on a weekday evening starting at 7pm. Although it is a classroom-based session, please try to avoid wearing high heels. Afterwards, the bar is usually open and this will give you a chance to chat informally to the coach and your fellow course attendees.
  • The Course: Your Learn To Cox course will then run for 6 further sessions. Some courses are a mixture of weekends and weekdays; some are exclusively weekday evenings please check the course lists below for exact dates. Weekend sessions will be on the ergo/water from 09.30am -11.00am, with breakfast afterwards in the clubroom; weekday evenings will be in the clubroom from 7pm - 8.30/9pm.The 7-session course aims to teach you the basics of coxing, from safety and navigation through to what to say and how to say it. Click here for more information.
  • Post Learn To Cox: At the end of the course, existing club members will return to their squads to continue developing their coxing skills with the support of their squad coach and crew. Those who are new to the club will be offered the opportunity to join a squad  we have a wide range choose from, to suit all aspirations and commitment levels! There is a programme of ongoing training and support for coxes, including masterclassessions on specific topics click here for more details.
  • The Course Fee: There is no specific charge for the course itself, but if you are new to the club you will need to pay the coxing membership fee, pro-rated from the month you join (click on the Membership menu link to check the table of fees). Please make your cheque payable to "Maidenhead Rowing Club", write "Learn To Cox membership" on the reverse and bring it with you to the introduction evening.

The membership fee is an annual sum that covers you under our insurance arrangements to use the club's facilities, but it is non-refundable in the event that you decide not to stay at the club after the course.

Please note that, although you are very unlikely to get wet, you must be able to swim at least 50 metres in light clothing to participate in this course. The sessions will require a certain amount of light rowing (on the ergo or in the boat), so if you have any concerns about your ability to undertake regular exercise, please consult your doctor before signing up.
