The camera is located in the Maidenhead Rowing Club boathouse facing south
along the river Thames at Maidenhead. The picture is updated every hour during
daylight and more frequently when there is likely to be some rowing activity. The
best time to catch some rowing is weekend mornings or summer evenings. In the background you can see Brunel's famous "Sounding Arch" railway bridge - the longest brick span in the world and also the shallowest in the world. It is said that Brunel was told by his contemporaries that the bridge would fall down. It hasn't done so yet, but if it does then you can see it here first! The bridge carries the Great Western Railway, a railway that Brunel designed and built with the intention of it linking London to the USA, the wet bit being done by boat of course. Brunel, being a man of many talents, also designed ships to carry the passengers across the Atlantic. In the foreground you may see general river traffic and crews from the Maidenhead Rowing Club going afloat. The most likely time to see rowing action is in the morning at weekends and in the evening during the week in the summer. Other river craft may bee seen any any time, but especially in the summer months when there is a large amount to holiday river traffic. Things you may spotRowing Crews
River CraftMaidenhead is on one of the busiest parts of the non tidal Thames, you may therefore see many craft on the river particularly in the summer months when there are a large number of hire cruisers making their way past the club. There are also a number of larger craft based in the area, namely The Edwardian The Georgian S.L. Belle S.L. Streatley Pink Champagne You may see any of these passing the club, perhaps with a party on-board or even a wedding. As soon as I can get photographs of these I will add them to the page to assist in identification. OtherIn addition to the river craft you may also be able to see the trains crossing the river on the Sounding Arch, although with the current resolution of the camera, these are not clear - watch out for image quality upgrades in future. The two cuttings below show shots where a train was on the bridge (take my word for it!).
